Created by New Orleans educator Aaron Jura as a creative project during the National Endowment for the Humanities seminar entitled Voices from the Misty Mountains. This NEH summer seminar for teachers was designed to introduce teachers from across the nation to the uniqueness of the Appalachian region through the literature, music, art, and storytelling of the area.
The summer seminar inspired Mr. Jura to create this site for people to peruse and use in and outside the classroom. The site can be used in a variety of ways. Stories of note have been posted in a blog format with a submit a story feature where students or community members can submit their family stories. The submit a story feature allows for typed submissions along side uploaded media (video, audio, historical documents, pictures, etc.)
The hope is that this website will continue to live on following the conclusion of the seminar, which was directed by Dr. Sylvia Shurbutt of the Department of English at Shepherd University.
